Music Library compact discs reach 10,000

The Music Library has added its 10,000th compact disc to the collection! The ceremonial 10,000th recording contains choral works of Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy. Mendelssohn was born in Hamburg, Germany on February 3, 1809, making 2009 his bicentennial year. He was active through the 1830s and 1840s as a conductor, pianist, organist, and composer. Mendelssohn's choral works show a variety of influences, from the counterpoint and choral techniques of Handel to the symmetry and balance of the Viennese classical style.

Check out Opera in Video, a database of streamed operas and documentaries about opera. Currently, there are about 100 productions included in the database, but more are added regularly. UNLV affiliated patrons can watch full-length opera streamed from this database from your home computer or on campus. Find your favorite opera and enjoy!

UNLV affiliated patrons can look up scores, print them for study, or just browse. This database of scores is available electronically 24/7 at a computer near you! Note: The Music Library will be closed Sunday, September 6 and Monday, September 7 for Labor Day.

Need some basic music information? The Oxford Reference Online may be your answer to get quick answers to some of your questions. The Oxford Reference Online contains online full-text editions of The Oxford Companion to the American Musical, The Oxford Companion to Music, The New Grove Book of Opera Singers, and The Grove Book of Operas. Yes, complete editions of these resources are available straight from your computer! The Oxford Dictionary of Dance and The International Encyclopedia of Dance are also available full-text online through the Oxford Reference Online. Are you looking for information on ethnic music of a country or region? Check out the Garland Encyclopedia of World Music Online. It may have the information for you! Articles in the Garland Encyclopedia contain surveys of musical heritage, traditions and themes of various regions and countries as well as descriptions of musical practices, and performances. Also included are photographs that show musicians, musical instruments, and the cultural context of dances, rituals, and ceremonies.
