Ebsco, the company through which the UNLV Libraries provides access to many databases, including PsycINFO and CINAHL, now has a mobile interface. If you want to test it please go to the link http://ezproxy.library.unlv.edu/login?url=http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?authtype=ip,uid&profile=mobsmart

I tried it using my iPhone and thought it worked very well. I was able to use our "get text" function to pull up articles and even submit an interlibrary loan request.

Medline Plus and Twitter

I'm not a regular user of Twitter, but I am a big fan of Medline Plus -- which now has a Twitter feed. It is called Medlineplus4you and is linked from http://www.medlineplus.gov An example of a recent tweet that should be of interest to Las Vegas residents "Smoky wildfires threaten folks w/ asthma, lung & heart diseases. Protect yourself."

One of the most important databases available at UNLV Libraries for search scientific literature is Web of Science. Simon Pratt from Thomson Reuters has written an interesting piece on how you can use Web of Science to identify important research on past influenza epidemics. Journal of Visualized Experiments

An announcement in the Chronicle of Higher Education that PubMed would begin indexing the Journal of Visualized Experiments piqued my interest. I had not heard of this open-access video journal before. If you go to the journal site at http://www.jove.com/ you can view videos of experimental techniques. The categories they list are: Basic Protocols, Neuroscience, Developmental Biology, Cellular Biology, Plant Biology, Microbiology, and Immunology.

West Nile Virus

A News 3 report, "West Nile Virus returns to Las Vegas", aired on July 29. Jesse Corona reported on the discovery of the West Nile Virus in the wetlands near Sam Boyd Stadium and the use of a fish, Gambusia Affinis, to eat mosquito larvae in an effort to prevent the spread of the virus.

If you are a regular user of PubMed you might want to take a look at an alternative search interface -- HubMed at http://www.hubmed.org It makes it easy to export citations to RefWorks and provides links to the Scopus database (to which we subscribe).

The Patient Safety section includes a "Do Not Use" list among its resources. A new report on the site is "One Size Does Not Fit All: Diverse Populations Pose Special Health Needs."
