The Winter 2006 issue of UNLV's Innovation Magazine is available on the web now. One of the articles is about the researchers in the School of Public Health. Among the community projects mentioned:
A team headed by Dr. Shawn Gerstenberger is analyzing lead levels in Mexican candy sold locally. He has received over $ 1.5 million in grants for this research.
Dr. Chad Cross received $ 1 million federal grant to create the Nevada Center for Environmental and Health Surveillance.
Dr. Michelle Chino and Dr. Mary Guinan received a $ 1.2 million grant in 2004 that resulted in the establishment of the Center for Health Disparities Research at UNLV.
Dr. Linda Stetzenbach is the principal investigator on three projects studying indoor air quality. Those three projects have received over $ 3 million in funding from the National Center for Energy Management and Building Technologies.
Dr. Melva Thompson-Robinson has received a $ 1 million grant to form the Institute for HIV Prevention Leadership UNLV is one of four institute partners -- the others are the Association of Schools of Public Health, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the University of South Carolina Arnold School of Public Health.
